Ellis COE, son of Josiah COE (c. 1842-c. 1906) and Susan MUSK (c. 1842-c. 1919), was born circa 1870 in South Lopham, Norfolk and was baptised there on 21st May 1871. Ellis probably had three periods in the military. Ellis was attested on 11th March 1891, passed the medical in Norwich the following day, and was appointed to the Coldstream Guards, Private 8408. The attestation papers stated that he had previously been in the 3rd Norfolk Militia. Ellis was discharged on 6th April 1891, no reason for this has been found. He embodied in the Norfolk Regiment on 18th November 1914. He was transferred on 28th April 1916 to 2/3rd Norfolk National Reserve to the Royal Defence Corps, Private 23946. On 3rd February 1917 he he was posted to 18th Battalion Royal Defence Corps. He was transferred on 15th August 1918 to from the Royal Defence Corps to the 23rd Battn. Royal Welsh Fusiliers, Private 31722. He was transferred on 15th November 1918 to from the Royal Welsh Fusiliers to the 318 Coy. Royal Defence Corps, Private 93594. During his service Ellis was in trouble several times, mainly for insubordination or absent with out leave. On 1st March 1919 Ellis was issued a Certificate of Identity, last known dated military event in his service. Ellis died on 2nd June 1925 in King’s Lynn - aged 54 years. He had his estate probated on 8th July 1925 in Norwich, Norfolk - “COE Ellis of 4 Bridge-street Kings Lynn Norfolk died 2 June 1925 Administration Norwich 8 July [1925] Caroline Elizabeth Coe widow. Effects £88 8s 8d”.
